The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults, or OCIA, is designed for those who are considering joining the Catholic Church through celebrating the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The process welcomes adults who have never been baptized and those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition.
OCIA is offered at SMTCP in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Our catechists are faith-filled individuals who are enthusiastic about passing on the Catholic faith. The OCIA classes are interactive, respectful, challenging and ENJOYABLE. The classes begin in October and last until Easter. We would be delighted for you to join us for any length of this journey. No commitment is necessary before we start—simply “come and see” for yourself and engage in some learning, prayer, community, and discernment. To sign up or ask questions about the OCIA program at SMTCP, contact the Parish Office either by email or by calling 312-842-6777 (STWS) or 312-842-7979 (SBWS). |
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I anticipate OCIA to be like? Is OCIA the same as Sunday School?
Not exactly but there are similarities. We meet in person for 1 hour each weekend at St. Therese Chinese Catholic Church. We learn more about Catholicism through a series of classes, discussions, prayer times and ceremonies. This program helps people grow in faith and knowledge of God as they consider becoming Catholic. Our catechists are faith-filled individuals who are enthusiastic about passing on the Catholic faith. The OCIA classes are interactive, respectful, challenging, and ENJOYABLE.
When does it start and end?
The classes begin in October and last until Easter.
What is the cost of the program?
There is no cost to attend OCIA. (God asks for your time and love).
What language is OCIA offered in?
At our parish, English, Cantonese, and Mandarin are available. Please check with other local parishes for other languages available.
Are there homework and tests?
Not like in school but there may be spiritual "homework" to think and reflect about ourselves and our relationship with God. And the exam is more of an examination of conscience - to think about whether becoming a Catholic is right for you and if you are called to the table of God.
What will follow after I complete the OCIA program?
You can choose to become a member of the Catholic Church, but no commitment is necessary before we start—simply “come and see” for yourself and engage in some learning, prayer, community, and discernment. The Sacraments of Initiation are celebrated during Easter Vigil. After receiving these Sacraments, the person is in full communion with the Catholic church. The person can receive Holy Communion during Mass.
