What does being the Archdiocesan Center of Chinese Apostolate mean?

St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish, which has two worship sites, is a special place, for not only is it called to proclaim Christ crucified in Bridgeport and Chinatown, but it is also entrusted with the care of the Chinese Apostolate for the entire Archdiocese of Chicago. But what exactly does this special designation signify and entail?

In the spirit of Santa Maria Incoronata, St. Barbara, St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, our parish has always dedicated itself to immigrants. Recognizing the creative action of the Holy Spirit operative in our parish in this unique way, the Archdiocese designated us as the Chinese Apostolate.  Under the visionary leadership of Fr. Francis Li, St. Mother Teresa has responded in the following practical ways:
  • Our website is currently in multi-languages. English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese
  • As outlined in Building the New Reality  we have an evangelization team and are planning both a Chinese and English Alpha.
  • Active Chinese Apostolate ministries include Masses, Devotions, and religious education in Cantonese and Mandarin, and various outreach programs for the Chinese community.

Catholic and Asian traditions coming together in Lunar New Year Celebrations

Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year in and of itself is not a religious holiday.  During the Lunar New Year Mass and Veneration of Ancestors, we experience how Catholic and Asian traditions come together. We give thanks to God together as the St. Mother Teresa Parish family and celebrate the New Year with God’s blessings. Firecrackers will ring in the new year, and a lion dance and other Asian traditions will honor God and God's love for humanity. We pray for a peaceful and harmonious new year ahead. We burn incense and pray for our ancestors and ask them to intercede for us with God, just as we burn candles and offer flowers, and pray to the saints to intercede for us - all power and glory come from God!
